San Fulgencio - Costa Blanca - Spain
San Fulgencio Costa Blanca: Situated on the CV-859 to the north of Rojales, the small Spanish village of San Fulgencio is very close to the modern residential development of La Marina, which has grown up due to the demand for holiday homes, and is largely occupied by British expats and other foreign nationals. San Fulgencio itself, still has the atmosphere of a traditional Spanish village and is mostly unspoilt by this modern development, in the centre is the ubiquitous town square with church (18th century) and modern town hall (Ayuntamiento).
The village developed fairly late in comparison to most of its neighbouring Vega Baja villages, dating only from the 18th century, when land was recovered from the marshes of the Segura river valley. This project which was started by the Bishop of Cartagena, created both the village of San Fulgencio and large areas of cultivable land, enabling the villagers to survive through agriculture. The actual year of the foundation of San Fulgencio is recorded as 1729, and it was already a sizeable village by the end of the 18th century when it was documented as having over 1,200 inhabitants.
It has of course, until recent times, been a purely agricultural village, with crops such as hemp, potatoes and artichokes being grown, the new industry of tourism and property development becoming important in the late 20th century.
While not a particularly busy village, San Fulgencio has the usual facilities, with a few shops, bars and restaurants in the centre. A bus stops on the main road in the centre of the village, enabling both visitors and locals to easily reach the Costa Blanca towns of Guardamar del Segura, Santa Pola, Torrevieja and Alicante. There is a much wider range of amenities in the nearby La Marina urbanization, and for the best beaches you can head to either Playa La Marina or Guardamar del Segura.
Also not too far distant are the resorts and beaches of the Orihuela Costa, here you can visit such popular resorts as Cabo Roig, La Zenia, Campoamor and Playa Flamenca.
For golfers the La Finca course is a popular choice and is located at nearby Algorfa, another nearby golf course is the La Marquesa Golf Club in Rojales/Ciudad Quesada.
The best shopping is to be found in Torrevieja or Alicante, both within reasonable driving distance.
Nature lovers can head for the El Hondo Nature Reserve or the Salinas de Santa Pola Nature Reserve, both are excellent spots for bird watchers.
The local street market in San Fulgencio takes place on Tuesday mornings, great for stocking up on fresh fruit and vegetables and also for purchasing gifts to take home.
There are no proper hotels in San Fulgencio, so for your accommodation in the area you will have to find a hotel in Rojales or Guardamar del Segura, or book yourself into a self-catering villa or apartment.
